Can We Just Admit It? Trump Is Definitely Pro-choice
Pro-lifers should not be confused over Trump's stance on abortion.
Over at Trump’s wrongly named Truth Social platform, the former president types in a short post:
“My Administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights.”
As Trump has been utilizing pro-choice sounding vernacular—such as telling his supporters to just follow their heart when it comes to abortion—, he is now using unmistakable pro-choice rhetoric. What Trump just posted could have been a statement that you wouldn’t even have to fish for very hard to find any Democrat who has been running for president in the past few decades.
Remember, Trump himself once described himself as being “very pro-choice” back in 1999, even going so far as supporting the practice of partial-birth abortion, which he would later backtrack on. It was not until 2011 when Trump proclaimed himself to be pro-life. Now, I doubt he would ever dare to call himself pro-life again.
As Patrick T. Brown, a fellow at the Ethics Public Policy Center, notes in an essay for the New York Times, Trump has abandoned the same pro-lifers who helped get him into office. Brown also highlights why championing life in the Republican Party and much of the Right is no longer a priority:
This shift has been a long time coming, but recent events have snapped it into focus. A secularizing America, plus the shifting composition of the Republican Party, means many G.O.P. voters are less churchgoing than prior generations. Many young conservatives, in particular, seem more enthusiastic about owning the libs than strengthening the family.
Much of conservatism lost its way as it gave up the Christian values that gave the movement its firm foundation. Once this foundation was lost, it made it easier for demagogues like Trump to reshape the Republican Party and large coalitions of the Right. Pro-lifers should not be deceived about Trump: he is not one of you. But pro-lifers also must get to work on influencing the culture with gospel-centered Christianity. This is how we bring wonderful and righteous change in America.
